| This is a tribute page for all the fine musical artists I was lucky enough to get to hear when I was growing up. While I can appreciate the shimmer of My Bloody Valentine or PJ Harvey, or the genius of the Beatles, I will always have a special place for the music I grew up on living on the South Side of Chicago. Most of these acts have never got any sort of recognition at all due to the radio station and music business policies of those times. Black acts simply were kept on black radio only, and the only way to put a face on these acts were to buy the albums or check them on "soul train" if you were lucky. Publications such as Rolling Stone, Spin, & Vibe continue to ignore these artists in their "Top 100 of all time" lists. |
| Of course with the creation of sampling many of these acts music have been used on various rap and pop tracks without you even knowing it, but the original songs deserve to be heard. You might find them on "soul" compilation cd's, or usenet mp3 groups dealing with R&B of the late 70's and 80's. Try to check out these artists if you can. Musicianship and songwriting on this level is simply not in this done in this day and age of single person producers and replaceable girl/guy groups.. I feel lucky to be able to appreciate these artists fine work, and at the same time enjoy many other genres of music at the same time. I think the way people listen to music have changed today, and I hope you can find a way to experience these artists soon.
