- Eprompter - check up to 8 email boxes at a time without having to open your browser. You can send email as well.
- Trillian - You can use all the major instant message services with 1 program. Easy to set up and low on cpu resources.
- Belarc advisor - need to know what you PC is made of? This program will give you a detailed look at your computer.
- Audiograbber - Best mp3 ripping and encoding software out there. And best of all it's not FREE. Grab the Lame mp3 encoder here and the the dll in your audiograbber folder. TO my ears the best sounding mp3 encoder. 128 kbps is cd quality as long as your not a dog or a submarine sonar engineer.
- VLC media player - Ever tried to open a movie file and it didn't play. Hate having to download codecs all the time that have a 50/50 chance of working? WIsh you could tweak the way your media player displays movies and plays sound? Download this media player. It plays anything. ANYTHING! It also is less bloatware than microsofts media players. Less work on the cpu and it takes less memory.
- Bitlord - If you use torrents this is the program you need. Automate downloads to the point where you can create a list of 50 items to get without having to sit and wait for them to come. Works with all bit torrent sites and is highly configurable.
- mp3 autotag 98 - There maybe better mp3 taggers out there but I find this one siuts my needs well. Able to rename and retag mp3's very fast and it will auto rename a long list of files instantly. Very nice.
- avg virus protection - when you don't want to pay for the bloatware, get this virus scanner. It's free and updated regularly. For best results run in safe mode.
- Adaware spyware personal - Best prog at finding evil spyware on your PC. Updated regularly. Best to run in safe mode.
- craigslist - If you don't know about this you are asleep. Provides local classifieds and forums for jobs, housing, for sale, personals, services, local community, and events. THis is the chicago link but there are 100's of cites to choose from in the USA and worldwide. It's free to use too. Can't beat that.
- Sue Fisher's THE FONT THING - It's not a good idea to have moer than 200 fonts installed on your computer. THis program will let you look at fonts not only in your system font folder, but anywhere on your PC. This way you can pick and choose what you need to have in your system FONT folder while keeping your other 1000 fonts in a seperate archiving folder. Nice utility and it's free.
- Try digicamreview and steves-digicams for all your digital camera purchase needs. Extensive reviews and untouched uncompressed photos to go along with the reveiws (on the digicamreview site there is a gallery page you can search for the model your interested in. Beleive me there is a big difference between the a $150 digital camera and a $350 digital camera sp doing reserach is a good idea.
- Want to use 2 (or more) computers at the same time with 1 monitor, keyboard n mouse. Then you need a KVM box. Easy to set up (no software needed) and switching between computers is as easy as hitting a button. Instead of getting rid of that slower computer you can fill it with hard drives and use it for non cpu intensive things like playing music,looking at art, or even smut.....I mean educational material.....
- Good places to buy computer and electronic equipment without fear of being raped and robbed? I have good success with Newegg I like the way they handle the rebate bullshit. List price first, then rebate price. You know what your really going to be paying right off without having to squint.
- Evernote - this program lets you save notes from all kinds of sources. What I like the most about it is when you copy web pages to it it retains the formatting perfectly. If you paste from evernote to WORD you et a perfectly formatted web page everytime. You can organize notes by self made catagories. You can search thru piles of notes. Take a look at this program, I can't really do it justice. It's freeware, but you'll think you paid for it.
- deadharddrive-com - Ever have a drive die on you without notice? USually a drive will click and knock when it's death is coming up. Somethimes you'll get this odd smell all the sudden and the drive won't work. In this case it's usually not the drive motor itself, but rather the PCB (printed cricuit board) which controls the drive. The motor control chip for the drive will short out. Check out deadharddrive.com to find out how to fix your drive. Interesting.
